Last week NOW (National Organization of Women) endorsed Barack Obama citing,
Although it is very unusual for us to endorse in a presidential election, this is an unprecedented candidate and an unprecedented time for our country. The NOW PAC reviewed Sen. Obama’s record and public statements on issues that disproportionately affect the women of this nation…
Although I’m not the least bit surprised, I do think it’s a bit hypocritical. Here McCain has chosen a woman as a running mate, and they endorse his opponent despite not usually endorsing in a presidential election. The same opponent who beat out Hillary Clinton. NOW is historically against conservatism. However, upon looking at the cabinet members from George W. Bush to Eisenhower (the first president to appoint a woman cabinet member), Republicans have appointed more women in cabinet positions than Democrats have. Talking about empowering women and actually empowering women are two different things.
NOW says that although Sarah Palin is a woman she does not support women’s rights. I have a hard time believing that Sarah Palin is not for pay equality and is not against violence towards women. So in reality, NOW is only concerned about a candidate being pro-abortion. I say pro-abortion as opposed to pro-choice because if they were really pro-choice then they wouldn’t have a problem with a woman choosing to be pro-life, choosing not to condone sex outside of marriage, and choosing options other than abortion. These are their big issues with Sarah Palin. Here we have a successful, articulate, intelligent mother of five as a vice-presidential candidate but NOW won’t get behind her because she is against letting them kill unborn women (and men).

Baby murder is never a pretty business.
Wow, I’ve never commented on a website before, but I felt it necessary to respond to this person, who seems tragically underinformed about Sarah Palin. Are you aware that the 1996, Palin supported a policy to make women raped in Alaska, a state with one of the highest rates for rape and incest, responsible for paying for there rape kits?
How about The Alaska Journal of Commerce reporting that in 2002, when Gov. Palin was running for lieutenant governor, she sent an e-mail to the Alaska Right to Life board saying she was as “pro-life as any candidate can be.
How about the fact that she backes “abstinence only” programs and cut funding for teen moms.
And…She is on the record as opposing abortion even in the case of rape or incest.
Sure seems like she’s against the progress that organizations like NOW have made over the past years…hmmm, I wonder why they endorsed someone like Barack Obama, who supports pay equity, reproductive rights and the continued reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act.
I’m in support of NOW and Barack Obama, and I suggest people look beneath the thin veneer of McCain’s pick of a “Main Streeter” like Palin before bashing other women for supporting Obama over Palin.
Thanks for reading.
My apologies for a few bad grammar moments and misspelled words in my earlier post…I unfortunately sent it off before proof reading it.
NOW exposed themselves as hypocrites with their support of rapist and serial groper/adulterer Bill Clinton.
NOW has evolved into a group that is devoted to liberal causes that affect women rather than all causes that affect women. The “National Organization of Women” should be composed of ALL women regardless of their particular view on a particular issue.
Stop acting like pro-choice/pro-abortion people would force women who are pro-life/pro-overpopulation/making-too-many-babies to get an abortion. I’m almost perfectly fine with you not wanting an abortion, so why can’t you be fine with someone else wanting one? If it was really such a close moral debate, then it would have already been pretty well decided one way or another. Unfortunately life dies all the time for the betterment of others. Even if someone is a vegetarian, they still kill life to support their own. Abortion should be legal, but used as little as possible and it should be as safe as possible; if you make it illegal then you will have many injuries and deaths from unsanitary back-alley abortions. Although I think the whole subject is just grimy, we need to remain practical and in touch with reality.
On another note, I have no opinion on NOW itself, but I’m pretty sure the judgement they are using is on the subject of the right to abortion for women, I have no doubt that Palin would be for equal pay/voting for women.
Condoning or not condoning sex outside of marriage is useless, telling teenagers to not have sex is one of the most futile things ever. Even teenagers who happily agree with and adopt that stance usually end up breaking it. Proper birth control and sex education practices are the most practical way to prevent situations in which an abortion would even be considered.
Palin started charging sexual assault victims for their own rape kits.
I’m just going to point that out. You want anti-woman candidate? Sarah Palin.
Wow…yeah, don’t know what I was thinking, posting all that FACTUAL stuff about Palin. Guess that crack haze is wearing off. Thanks, whoever posed as me and posted something so virulent (look it up) in my name. Goes to show you just how hateful some folks can be…no wonder we’re in the position we’re in and no wonder I’ve never posted comments before, nor will I ever again. Very immature!
It’s funny to me how folks that support McCain/Palin, Bush/Cheney or whatever GOP candidate du jour are supposedly all about constitutional freedoms, but slam anyone opposed to their beliefs. Isn’t freedom of speech a fundamental element in which this “great” country of ours was founded?
Why should I as a tax payer have to pay for someone else’s rape kit?
olygirl is such an idiot. these are the issues you are worried about right now? in these times? not only will roe v. wade NEVER be over turned, it will become increasingly distant to the base of the republican party and we will finally watch as the gluttonous, blood sucking, pus oozing pig of a government come to an end in washington
Olygirl…might want to look t Fact Check? All that “factual” stuff, exposed as inaccurate or outright lies and misinformation.
It’s amazing. You all seem intelligent enough to perform a little research…yet no one does?!?
Everything olygirl posted is factual. And using emotionally charged words like “baby-killing” and “pro-abortion” has been the backbone of the GOP’s campaign strategy for the past 8 years. First, I want to point out the hilarious fact of people like “Michael”, “Craig” and “Dr.Bruce” have come to attack NOW, just thought that was funny. Second point is aimed towards “We”. Are you kidding about the tax payer comment? If a person is murdered, who pays for the criminal trial? Tax Payers. And you pay for that every time because God forbid if you were ever the victim of a crime, you would be begging for the government to do whatever they could to catch the guilty party, as well they should. Third and I think finally for now, abortion is merely a hot-button issue that has been brought into play by the right to easily rally support from people. It is such a morally difficult decision that it is likely to be split nearly down the middle when it comes to support, therefore, it’s nearly impossible to change anything and we come to every election with the promise of overturning Roe v. Wade. “We” was right about two things, Roe v. Wade will not be overturned and we have a lot of things that are more important to worry about than pro-life/pro-choice. Our economy is in shambles, we’re entrenched in two wars and the entire world hates us. Stop playing to their political games and don’t latch on to these hot button issues.
olygirl and JTDC, If you are going to spew “facts” please state your sources preferably a reputable site. According to FactCheck.org, Q: Did Sarah Palin make rape victims pay for their own rape kits?
A: Palin’s police chief in Wasilla did that.
My point was that NOW only cares about abortion rights. A point in which everyone who has commented on this post seems to agree with.
Dr. Bruce, I agree with you wholeheartedly. NOW only cares about liberal women and are worse than those misogynistic men they are always complaining about when they tear down and attack another woman because she doesn’t agree with their views.
Nukeslion, I cannot be fine with anyone having an abortion because I cannot be fine with murder of human beings.
As far as my being “pro-life/pro-overpopulation/making-too-many-babies”, your logic is flawed. One of the main reasons we have a social security crisis is because there are not enough people in the work force to support the retiring baby boomer work force. Could that possibly be because of the approximately 50 million babies that were killed? China is now facing a crisis of not having enough where they are only allowed to have 1 child so the baby girls are aborted or discarded. “In some parts of the country, men outnumber women by as much as 20 percent.”
I am appalled by your statement, “Unfortunately life dies all the time for the betterment of others.” How self-absorbed can a person be to kill another person because they don’t want to be “inconvenienced”? This is the reasoning for most abortions not rape or incest.
Voter, Freedom of speech has nothing to do with freedom of choice. I was exercising my freedom of speech by writing this article just as you were by commenting on it. As a side note, your freedoms end where another person’s freedom begins.

Obama is the most liberal, anti freedom, anti gun( both of which allow me to protect self so i can protect family) that has ever run! you are griping about abortion which has nothing to do with propagation, it will continue; and government should not be allowed into any realm that is God given or a decision made between He and his creations! MY sons are in the military and did not get aborted, though they would have if they had my defects, gov’t be damned! they also should not have to serve under an inexperienced appeaser that won’t even respect the flag, much less the military that he is drooling to control! WE DESERVE BETTER!
“Here we have a successful, articulate, intelligent mother of five”
the only part of this sentence that is true is the “mother of five” part.
Randy, stop the hate speech. Pretty sure nothing that you just said in there is reputable at all. Anti-Freedom? Let’s look at the demolition of our constitutional rights that the Bush Administration has let loose with and then talk about Anti-Freedom. Most liberal? Well, the National Journal (the publication that is being used for this repeated most liberal statement) does do an annual survey on voting records, and they did show Obama voted the most liberal….buuuuut, let’s look into context.
1) He missed 1/3 of the 99 votes they used because he was campaigning for president. Okay, deal with it. Our election process has become drawn out, but he has to play in the system that is currently set up.
2) In his two previous years, he ranked 16th and 10th. Of course, these things change year to year since different bills are offered, and he has his own views.
3) The publication was released early this year so that it would make it out by Super Tuesday. Funny how they wanted to make sure that Republicans had this to talk about in the campaign to come. Especially because the publication did the same thing in 2004 when Kerry ran for President, when again, there was an oddity with Kerry being ranked the most liberal.
4) Your children would have been aborted had they had your defects? Are you saying that you and your wife would have chosen abortion, or that the government would have mandated abortion, because NO ONE is trying to force abortions on people, they are fighting for a woman’s right to choose.
5) What is this about him refusing to respect the flag? This unpatriotic nonsense has got to stop. I do not stand with my hand over my heart for the National Anthem, and I haven’t been a part of a Pledge of Allegiance for quite sometime. I stand with my hands behind my back and my head bowed in quiet contemplation of how lucky I am to live in a free country. Many people do this, it is not disrespect
Here is another link to the truth about Palin. http://explorations.chasrmartin.com/2008/09/06/palin-rumors/
It’s interesting to me that people will believe blatant lies about Palin, some which are entirely unsubstantiated, petty, or superficial… but nobody wants to look at the TRUTH about Obama.
I think hope, dreams, prosperity — all these concepts, are just as desireable and wonderful as Obama does. What I do NOT subscribe to is this: that a man who will be friendly with terrorists (ayers and his stance on meeting without precondition, and other relationships), votes extremely liberal or not at all (why isn’t this a bigger deal? the man has no experience and hasn’t even done his job during what little experience he had), has made disgusting off-handed elietist remarks about middle America, and has himself asked for more pork and earmarks in his few years in government than Senator McCain has in his entire career (which is saying a lot) — I do NOT believe that THIS is the man who should be, or is even capable of bringing the kind of change America wants and needs.
It is fine by me if you choose to vote Obama, but don’t tell me it’s because you believe he has strong character, is honest, is moderate, wants to unify, or is independent and fresh, or is moral and ethical, or is experienced. I hope more people will be honest with themselves about why exactly they are voting for whomever they end up chosing, instead of making excuses or wearing rose-colored glasses.
Lastly – someone said that talking to teenagers about not having sex is useless. That is the most rediculous thing I’ve ever heard in my life. Children do listen to their parents, and the result of a strong, healthy parent-child relationship is mutual respect and better decision making. Maybe if the liberals didn’t have control over our schools, and weren’t doing such an abismal job of “educating” our children, family bonds might be stronger and their effects more potent. This is likely one of many other obstacles I am sure. But to blatantly discount the effects of talking to children about their options and explaining abstinence in a serious and informative way is, in my mind, foolish.
