I don’t care to much for the rest of Brummett’s article but he does make a great point with this…
I propounded a theory a couple of weeks ago that the candidate who wins the votes of East Arkansas farmers wins the state.
Al Gore lost Arkansas because farmers didn’t trust his environmental advocacy. Mark Pryor, Blanche Lincoln, Mike Beebe, Mike Ross, Marion Berry - all hold office because they are sensitive and connected to farmers, and, by extension, conservative white rural voters generally.
Mike Huckabee got it. The Hutchinsons, Asa and Tim, didn’t.

And now we have federal races in Arkansas that are uncontested. The Arkansas Green Party is the only opposition out here. They are also the ones pointing out the direct relationship between bad farm policy and food prices. The American farmer can be helped in ways that do not impact the food supply. Ethanol supports are not helping the gas problem and are impacting the price of everything. A real bio-fuels program would create a market for farm waste. This is literally something for nothing for the American farmer. The ability to turn any organic waste from weeds to manure into fuel would be supported by any Arkansas farmer who had the facts.
