Fred Thompson’s newly hired research director JT Mastranadi has stepped down after a week and a half on the job, out of concern that he hadn’t found what he expected when he began to see what the Thompson campaign was all about.

Specifically, he found a team without a leader or a specific mission; as a researcher, he’d come to work each day and the campaign would ask him what they should be doing that day, instead of telling him what his job should be. Nobody’s calling the shots, and there’s no overarching vision for the direction of the non-campaign.

The resignation comes one day after acting campaign director Tom Collamore moved to an advisory role yesterday due to clashes with Fred Thompson’s wife Jeri Kehn Thompson - a hard-nosed former GOP operative and a long-time political professional with a strong will. Insiders have long speculated that her personality would play a big role in the narrative of Thompson’s candidacy. Technically, Thompson’s candidacy hasn’t even begun yet and it’s already caused a staff shake-up – as well as an embarrassing, poorly handled response.
